ChatGPT Study Mode (opens in a new tab) is a way to learn and revise using the artificial intelligence chatbot, ChatGPT. Unlike regular ChatGPT, Study Mode focuses on step-by-step guidance rather than quick answers, designed to help you learn and retain knowledge better.
87% of students use ChatGPT, making it the dominant AI study tool. But how does Study Mode actually work, and how effective is it as a revision tool?
This article explains ChatGPT Study Mode – what it is, its key features, plus the pros and cons – to help you to make an informed decision about whether to include it as part of your revision strategy.
Key Takeaways
Unlike regular ChatGPT, ChatGPT Study Mode helps you come to answers yourself through step-by-step learning and Socratic questioning
Key features of Study Mode include interactive prompts, personalised support and knowledge checks
Like any AI tool, ChatGPT Study Mode can make mistakes, so use it to enhance your revision instead of relying on it completely
What is ChatGPT Study Mode?
Launched in July 2025, ChatGPT Study Mode is a way to learn and revise using ChatGPT, focusing on step-by-step guidance instead of quick answers. Key features of Study Mode include interactive prompts, personalised support and knowledge checks.
Essentially, Study Mode is designed to support deeper learning through fostering active participation, self-reflection and curiosity. According to Robbie Torney, the Senior Director of AI Programs at Common Sense Media, Study Mode “encourages students to think critically about their learning” rather than doing the work for them. You’ll also receive clear, practical feedback to help you improve.
The table below outlines how Study Mode differs from standard ChatGPT:
Standard ChatGPT | ChatGPT Study Mode | |
Primary Goal | To respond to various different prompts quickly | To help students to learn and revise |
Answer Style | Direct, immediate solutions | Step-by-step guidance and Socratic questioning |
User Role | Passive: reading the output | Active: solving the problem |
How Does ChatGPT Study Mode Work?
When you activate ChatGPT Study Mode, you’ll be directed to a new chat, under which there will be a few prompts to help you get started:
Help me with my homework
Explain a topic to me
Create a practice quiz
You don’t have to use one of the prompts; they’re just there to give you an idea of what types of interactions Study Mode enables. If you have a topic in mind, you can simply ask a question to get a response.
For example, I asked ChatGPT Study Mode a question from Cambridge IGCSE History: was the Treaty of Versailles fair? The response was as follows:
“Let’s study it together rather than jumping straight to a conclusion” – this sets up the step-by-step approach
Some brief context on what the Treaty of Versailles was and where the debate comes from – ideal if you’re new to a topic or just need a refresher
Bullet points of arguments that it was fair versus arguments that it was unfair – helpful as an overview
Emphasis on the need to build evidence before evaluation – a crucial skill in History!
A question posed to me about what I think makes a peace treaty ‘fair’ after a war – a classic Socratic method approach, encouraging you to think about a debate yourself instead of just being given the answers. As a tutor in History, Philosophy/RS and English, I’m a huge advocate of the Socratic method for getting closer to the truth and revealing any assumptions you might have before you make up your mind about something
Some examples of areas I might consider before giving my answer, e.g. punishment matching responsibility – great if you’re drawing a blank and just need some ideas to get you thinking
Key Features of ChatGPT Study Mode
OpenAI has identified five key features of ChatGPT Study Mode. These are listed below, alongside an explanation of what makes each feature specifically suited to learning and revising compared to regular ChatGPT:
1. Interactive prompts
Socratic questioning, hints and self-reflection prompts help you to come to answers yourself
Active engagement is a much more effective revision method than passively reading an answer (like you would using regular ChatGPT)
2. Scaffolded responses
Having the information organised into easy-to-follow sections highlights the connections between topics, whereas the output of regular ChatGPT is often less clear and concise
Seeing how topics connect makes revision less overwhelming and helps you to do well in exams requiring you to draw on multiple related topics (such as GCSE RS and A Level Statistics)
3. Personalised support
Using memory from previous chats and questions to assess your skill level, you’ll be given lessons tailored to your ability
Support designed specifically for you is more effective than the more generic outputs of regular ChatGPT
4. Knowledge checks
Quizzes, open-ended questions and personalised feedback help you to monitor your progress and retain knowledge
Although regular ChatGPT can also create quizzes, it gives you the questions all at once, followed by an answer key. Alternatively, ChatGPT Study Mode asks you questions one at a time, allowing you to submit your answer and get feedback and tips on each question in real time
5. Flexibility
You can easily toggle Study Mode on and off, allowing you to adapt to your learning goals in each conversation
Though ChatGPT is more flexible and fast for quick, direct answers, the flexibility of Study Mode is better for deeper, more debatable topics
How to Use ChatGPT Study Mode for Revision
Here are some practical ways you can revise using ChatGPT Study Mode:
Explanations
Ask Study Mode to explain tricky concepts to you, e.g. ‘Explain how to solve a linear equation for AQA GCSE Maths (Foundation) with two examples’
The step-by-step breakdown should make the topic much clearer, and you’ll be asked a question at the end to test your understanding
Memory tricks
Ask Study Mode to give you a mnemonic or acronym to help you remember important information, e.g. ‘Give me an acronym for William James’s characteristics of religious experience for OCR A Level RS’
Study Mode will usually give you mnemonics or acronyms that are already well-known, e.g. PINT (Passive, Ineffable, Noetic and Transient) in the case above
Once you’re more familiar with a topic and you’ve asked Study Mode to give you a quiz, ask for a practice question, e.g. ‘Give me an extract-based question about Macbeth for Edexcel GCSE English Literature’
Try answering the question without your notes first, but keep in mind that you can use Study Mode for prompts (such as what you might include in your essay plan) and feedback on your writing
To get the most out of Study Mode, make your AI prompts specific and detailed, like the ones in the examples above. Rather than asking Study Mode to simply explain a concept, specify your exam board, tier (if applicable) and the kind of output you want.
Limitations and Drawbacks of ChatGPT Study Mode
While ChatGPT Study Mode is impressive, it does – like any AI tool – have its limitations (opens in a new tab). Here are some of the drawbacks of Study Mode to keep in mind:
Message Caps
Like regular ChatGPT, Study Mode has rules limiting how much you can use it in a specified time period. If you hit your limit, you’ll need to wait for Study Mode to reset or use another available model or tool. Caps can be frustrating, especially when you’re in the zone or your revision is time-sensitive.
Lack of Human Connection
After the government announced a plan to introduce AI tutors for disadvantaged pupils (opens in a new tab), many expressed concerns over AI’s inability to truly connect and empathise with pupils. As a tutor myself, I can pick up on the facial expressions and tone of voice that show my student is struggling; Study Mode can’t.
In response to a survey conducted by the National Education Union (opens in a new tab), one teacher shared that 90% of their students said they “would not want an AI teacher due to lack of connection, motivation and communication”. My students have expressed the same views, and the ones who’ve benefitted the most from my tutoring have found the relationship and pastoral support just as important as the academic support, if not more so.
Reduced Peer Interaction
Relying on Study Mode can lead you to miss out on collaborative revision opportunities. When I was in sixth form, my classmates and I would go to Starbucks after school to revise A Level History. We discussed tricky concepts, tested one another, and found that we were largely experiencing the same challenges. Discussing Tudor parliaments with friends over an iced latte made revision a lot more enjoyable!
Is ChatGPT Study Mode Accurate and Reliable?
AI generally has a tendency to confidently produce false information (‘hallucinate’), and ChatGPT Study Mode is no exception. OpenAI is very clear about the fact that ChatGPT Study Mode, like regular ChatGPT, can make mistakes.
As an example, I asked Study Mode to give me key quotes from a specific character in A Thousand Splendid Suns for Edexcel A Level English Literature. While it did create a useful table (with a short quote in one column and what the quote suggests in another), the first result was, unfortunately, a quote from a totally different character.
So, while ChatGPT Study Mode is generally accurate and reliable, you shouldn’t assume it’s completely right every time you use it. It’s therefore important to give Study Mode very precise instructions and to double-check important information, especially for homework and exam-specific content.
How Does ChatGPT Study Mode Compare to Other Revision Tools?
Gemini Guided Learning (opens in a new tab)
Launched one month after ChatGPT Study Mode, Gemini Guided Learning is the Google equivalent of ChatGPT Study Mode
Responses in Gemini Guided Learning are generally more concise and factual, and the integration with Google makes it easier to use alongside Google elements like Drive, Slides and Search
ChatGPT Study Mode is considered better for in-depth explanations, but it has a less generous daily limit compared to Gemini Guided Learning
Claude (opens in a new tab)
Released in March 2023, Claude – like ChatGPT Study Mode – aims to work with you to break down problems and complete projects
Because Claude has a much larger context window (working memory), it can hold an entire textbook chapter, allowing for much more nuanced and in-depth explanations
Claude is generally better for help with long-form writing like essays, whereas many students prefer ChatGPT Study Mode for advanced maths problems

Should You Use ChatGPT Study Mode for Your Revision?
You’ll likely benefit from revising with Study Mode in the following cases:
You’re finding revising certain topics challenging – the step-by-step guidance will break content down into manageable chunks
You’re not sure where you stand on certain debates – for essay-based subjects with few clear right-or-wrong answers – like A Level RS – Study Mode’s Socratic questioning can help you to develop a clear line of argument
You don’t want to be spoon-fed answers – active recall through quizzes and exam-style questions is much more beneficial than passive revision
You should, however, think twice about revising with Study Mode in these scenarios:
You’re lacking motivation – you’re unlikely to get the best out of Study Mode if you’re not motivated to learn for yourself, so read our guide on how to motivate yourself to study for help with getting into your revision first
You prefer human interaction – some of my students don’t even like online sessions and much prefer face-to-face, so if this applies to you, you’re not alone. If you’re worried about the cost of a tutor or scheduling issues, consider our best alternatives to tutors (one of which is peer learning)
You need fast answers – for example, if you’re taking GCSE Psychology, you might just need to check a specific word definition. If so, you’re better off using regular ChatGPT or our GCSE Psychology Glossary
Frequently Asked Questions
Is ChatGPT Study Mode Free to Use?
Yes! Study Mode is available to all logged-in ChatGPT users, including those on a free plan.
If you want higher limits or access to more advanced models, consider investing in ChatGPT Plus, but you don’t need a paid subscription to use Study Mode.
Can I Use ChatGPT Study Mode for GCSE and A Level Revision?
You absolutely can, but just keep in mind that Study Mode is not aligned to any specific exam board or subject. Make sure you give very precise prompts that include your exam board and specification, and double-check any information before relying on it for revision.
Does Using ChatGPT Study Mode Count as Cheating?
Using Study Mode to learn – exploring topics, getting explanations and testing yourself – is generally fine, as it’s similar to using a textbook or revision guide.
However, if you're submitting work that ChatGPT Study Mode wrote for you as your own, that does count as a form of cheating: plagiarism. Schools and exam centres take plagiarism very seriously, especially for coursework submissions. Check with your school and exam board for their policy on AI use, and remember that Study Mode is there to help you understand rather than to copy.
Can ChatGPT Study Mode Create Practice Questions for Me?
Yes! Creating practice quizzes is one of the key uses of ChatGPT Study Mode, and you can also use it to create exam-style practice questions.
As a form of active recall, practice questions are especially useful for retention and revision.
Final Thoughts
Created specifically for students, ChatGPT Study Mode can be an effective revision tool for tricky topics, active recall, and thinking more deeply about a subject.
Keep in mind that, like any AI tool, ChatGPT Study Mode can make mistakes. Study Mode should guide your revision rather than dictate it, and it’s best used alongside other effective revision tools like collaborative revision, apps and Save My Exams.
