Converting units

How do I convert units of lengths?

  • For metric units, conversion can be done by simply multiplying or dividing by powers of 10

  • You need to know the basic conversions for length

    • 1 cm = 10 mm

    • 1 m = 100 cm

    • 1 km = 1000 m

  • You need to decide whether to multiply or divide by the conversion factor

    • Ask, does the number of units increase or decrease?

      • The number of mm is 10 times bigger than the number of cm so mm = cm × 10

  • You can do the conversion in stages

    • First convert kilometres into metres then metres into centimetres

How do I convert units of mass?

  • For metric units, conversion can be done by simply multiplying or dividing by powers of 10

  • You need to know the basic conversions for mass

    • 1 g = 1000 mg

    • 1 kg = 1000 g

    • 1 tonne = 1000 kg

Worked Example

Convert

(a) 54 cm to mm

Answer:

1 cm = 10 mm

54 cm = (54 × 10) mm = 540 mm

540 mm

(b) 12 300 cm to km

Answer:

First convert from cm to m
100 cm = 1 m

12 300 cm = (12 300 ÷ 100) m = 123 m

Now convert from m to km
1000 m = 1 km

123 m = (123 ÷ 1000) km = 0.123 km

0.123 km

(c) 485 g to kg

Answer:

1000 g = 1 kg

485 g = (485 ÷ 1000) kg

0.485 kg

What are metric and imperial units?

  • All the units above are known as metric units

    • They are based on metres for length, grams for mass, and litres for volume

    • They are based on powers of 10 (e.g. 1 ml is one thousandth of a litre)

  • Imperial units are an older system of measurement, but often still used in daily life

  • You may encounter:

    • Miles, feet and inches for length

    • Pounds (lb) and ounces for mass

    • Pints and gallons for volume

How do I convert between metric and imperial units?

  • In the exam you will be given the appropriate conversion factors

  • E.g. You may be told that 1 gallon is approximately (≈) 4.546 litres

    • To convert from gallons to litres, multiply by 4.546

    • To convert from litres to gallons, divide by 4.546

Worked Example

A construction worker, Rhiannon, needs to pour a concrete foundation for a small shed.

The client provided the dimensions for the length of the foundation in imperial units: 15 feet and 9 inches.

Rhiannon needs to calculate the length of the foundation in metres.

Use the following facts to find the length of the foundation in metres, to two decimal places.

  • 1 foot = 12 inches

  • 1 foot ≈ 0.3048 metres

Answer:

Convert 15 feet and 9 inches to feet

There are 12 inches in a foot, so 15 feet and 9 inches can be written as

open parentheses 15 plus 9 over 12 close parentheses space feet

Simplify this, using the fact that 9 over 12 equals 3 over 4 equals 0.75

15.75 feet

Use the fact that 1 foot ≈ 0.3048 metres

Multiply by 0.3048

15.75 × 0.3048 = 4.8006 metres

Round to two decimal places

The length is 4.80 m
