Analysis
Iago personifies jealousy as a monster that destroys the person it lives in. The image is honest in a way he does not intend, because he feeds on Othello in the same way.

Analysis
The simile turns Othello's mind into a plague house with a raven circling above it. His jealousy now arrives on its own, so he no longer controls his own thoughts.

Analysis
Emilia argues that women learn bad behaviour from the men who mistreat them in marriage. She names a double standard that the rest of the play simply accepts.

Analysis
Desdemona credits Othello's calm nature to the country he came from. Her explanation resists the prejudice that her society attached to his appearance.

Analysis
Iago's list of three makes his own prejudice sound like a law of nature. Claiming that this is what "nature tends" to do hides the racism inside the argument.

Analysis
Iago admits that he is a deception in the plainest possible words. Only Roderigo and the audience hear it, so we watch his dishonesty work while the other characters cannot.
