How to answer:

• Use only the extract

• Evaluate in your own words, with a detail for each point

• Make 3–4 distinct points, with no introduction or conclusion

Timing: ~50 minutes

Type: speech, letter, article or report (discursive, argumentative or persuasive), 250–350 words

Marks: 35 marks (10 reading + 25 writing)

How to answer:

• Identify the form, audience and purpose

• Use and develop the texts' ideas in your own words

• State your viewpoint early and keep to it

Timing: ~60 minutes (15 plan + 45 write)

Type: one composition from four titles: descriptive (Q2 or Q3) or narrative (Q4 or Q5), 350–450 words

Marks: 40 marks (16 content and structure + 24 style and accuracy)

How to answer:

• Descriptive = a picture, not a story

• Narrative = a shaped plot with a clear ending

• Vary your sentences and proofread
