How Many GCSE Business Studies Papers Are There?

If you’re taking GCSE Business Studies, you might be wondering how many exam papers you’ll have and what topics they’ll test you on. While specifications offer this information, they’re often 30-50 pages long and full of jargon that you really don’t need.

There are four UK exam boards currently offering GCSE Business Studies: AQA (opens in a new tab), Pearson Edexcel (opens in a new tab), OCR (opens in a new tab) and WJEC Eduqas (opens in a new tab). All specifications consist of two compulsory papers, apart from Eduqas’s Welsh offering, WJEC CBAC (opens in a new tab) (which consists of four compulsory units).

This article offers a simple breakdown for all exam boards on what each component covers, the format, and how you’ll be assessed.

Key Takeaways

  • AQA, Pearson Edexcel, OCR and WJEC Eduqas all consist of two compulsory papers, while WJEC CBAC has four compulsory units

  • WJEC CBAC includes two non-exam assessments (NEAs), but the other specifications do not include any coursework elements

  • Prepare for your GCSE Business Studies exams using a variety of methods and resources, including our revision pages

GCSE Business Studies Assessment Structure Explained

AQA, Pearson Edexcel, OCR and WJEC Eduqas all offer linear qualifications for GCSE Business Studies. This means you’ll sit both your exams at the end of Year 11.

WJEC CBAC takes a unitised approach: two written exams (Unit 1 and Unit 3) and two NEAs (Unit 2 and Unit 4). The units are designed to be part of a two-year programme for Welsh learners in years 10 and 11.

All specifications cover similar core areas, including business operations, marketing and finance.

Use real-world examples

  • The business world is dynamic and ever-changing, and examiners love to see current, topical examples to illustrate concepts like pricing strategies

  • You can filter the news by business categories to make sure you’re keeping up-to-date on relevant events and trends

Read examiner reports

  • Find out what mistakes to avoid and what other students did well by reading what examiners have said

  • Here’s a sample examiner report from AQA (opens in a new tab) and one from Pearson Edexcel (opens in a new tab)

Frequently Asked Questions

Are all GCSE Business Studies papers compulsory?

Yes. AQA, Pearson Edexcel, OCR and WJEC Eduqas all have two compulsory papers, and WJEC CBAC has four compulsory units.

Do the papers have equal weighting?

AQA, Pearson Edexcel and OCR have equal weighting, as both components for each exam board are worth 50% each.

WJEC does not have equal weighting: WJEC Eduqas’s components are worth 62.5% (Component 1) and 37.5% (Component 2), and WJEC CBAC has two units worth 30% (Unit 1 and Unit 3), one unit worth 25% (Unit 4) and one worth 15% (Unit 2).

Can I resit individual GCSE Business Studies papers?

GCSE resits usually require you to resit all papers. Pearson Edexcel (opens in a new tab), for example, makes it clear that in order to try for a higher grade, you need to retake all exams.

OCR states that you must retake all examined components, but you can choose to either retake the

NEA or carry forward (re-use) your most recent result.

WJEC CBAC does allow you to resit an individual unit. However, if you attempt any unit twice and you want to enter the unit for the third time, then you’ll have to re-enter all units.

Check with your teacher for more information on resits.
