Immerse yourself daily

Rather than reading your textbook for hours on end, you can incorporate Spanish into your everyday routines and habits:

• For your speaking/oracy component, speak to your classmates in Spanish as much as possible – both during and outside of class

• For writing, speaking and listening, try combining learning vocabulary with music. My Year 9 Spanish teacher once asked us to write a song about healthy living, so I wrote my own Spanish lyrics to the tune of Food, Glorious Food. I can still remember the whole song – starting with “comida sana, comida, las verduras y fruta” – 20 years later!

• For pronunciation, vocabulary, listening comprehension and translation, listen to as much Spanish as possible. You could listen to Spanish radio and watch your favourite TV shows or movies in Spanish, with English/Spanish subtitles
