  • Define alkane.

Cards in this collection (9)

  • Define alkane.

An alkane is a saturated hydrocarbon with the general formula CnH2n+2. All carbon-carbon bonds in alkanes are single bonds (C-C).

  • Why are alkanes described as generally unreactive compounds?

Alkanes are generally unreactive because they contain only strong single covalent bonds (C-C and C-H). These bonds require a lot of energy to break, making alkanes resistant to most chemical reactions.

  • The general formula of the alkanes is .........., where n is the number of carbon atoms.

The general formula of the alkanes is CnH2n+2, where n is the number of carbon atoms.

  • True or False?

Methane has the molecular formula CH6.

    False.

Methane has the molecular formula CH4. It is the first alkane and follows the general formula CnH2n+2 with n = 1.

  • What are the products of the complete combustion of an alkane?

    Complete combustion of an alkane produces carbon dioxide and water. For example: CH4 (g) + 2O2 (g) → CO2 (g) + 2H2O (l)

  • Give the names and molecular formulae of the first four alkanes.

    1. Methane: CH4

    2. Ethane: C2H6

    3. Propane: C3H8

    4. Butane: C4H10

  • True or False?

Alkanes contain covalent bonds because they are made of non-metal atoms.

    True.

Alkanes are made entirely of carbon and hydrogen atoms, which are both non-metals. Non-metal atoms form covalent bonds by sharing electrons.

  • Complete combustion of propane produces .......... and .......... : C3H8 + 5O2...........

Complete combustion of propane produces carbon dioxide and water: C3H8 + 5O23CO2 + 4H2O.

  • How does the boiling point change as alkane chain length increases, and why?

Boiling point increases with chain length. Longer alkane molecules have stronger intermolecular forces between them, so more energy is needed to separate the molecules.
