    A molecular formula shows the types of atoms in a molecule (given by chemical symbols) and the number of each type of atom (given by subscript numbers).

    The swap-and-drop method is used when two ions have different charges. The size of each ion's charge becomes the subscript of the other ion, giving the ratio that produces an overall neutral compound.

    After swapping and dropping, always simplify to the lowest whole-number ratio. If the method is applied without simplifying, it can produce incorrect formulas such as Ca2O2 instead of CaO. Equal charges give a 1:1 ratio — no further simplification is needed in that case.

    A word equation shows the reactants and products of a chemical reaction written as full chemical names, with reactants on the left and products on the right of an arrow.

    When balancing an equation, you can change the subscript numbers in a formula.

    False.

    You can only change the coefficients (numbers in front of formulas). Changing subscripts would alter the identity of the substance.

  • What are the four state symbols used in symbol equations and what does each represent?

    The four state symbols are (s) for solid, (l) for liquid, (g) for gas and (aq) for aqueous (dissolved in water).

    State symbols are essential in ionic equations because they distinguish between species in solution (aq) and those that are solid, liquid or gaseous.

    Spectator ions are ions that appear on both sides of a full ionic equation unchanged. They are removed from the ionic equation because they do not take part in the reaction.
