  • What is a noble gas?

A noble gas is a Group 0 element that is monoatomic, colourless and chemically inert (unreactive) because it has a full outer shell of electrons.

  • Why are noble gases chemically inert?

Noble gases have a full outer shell of electrons, giving them an extremely stable electronic configuration. They do not need to gain, lose or share electrons, so they do not form bonds or react.

  • Complete the table with the electronic configurations of the Noble gases.

  • True or False?

Noble gases exist as diatomic molecules at room temperature.

    False.

Noble gases are monoatomic: they exist as single atoms because their full outer shells make them so stable that they do not bond even with atoms of the same element.

  • What percentage of dry air is made up of noble gases?

Noble gases make up approximately 1% of dry air. They form the remainder after nitrogen (78%) and oxygen (21%).
