What is the media?

  • ‘The Media’ refers to all the different ways that information, ideas and entertainment is communicated to audiences

  • Media are all the different platforms and technologies used for this communication

  • There are three main types of media:

    • Print media

    • Broadcast media

    • Online media 

  • Print media

    • Media which has been printed such as magazines, newspapers or posters

  • Broadcast media

    • Media which has been distributed through television, radio or film

  • Online media

    • Content that is communicated through social media, apps and websites

Impact of the media

  • Media is a key part of our daily lives and contributes to our everyday experiences in a variety of ways

  • Media impacts our lives because it has the power to:

    • Shape opinions, beliefs and values

    • Influence culture, behaviour and social norms

    • Provide information, entertainment and education

    • Connect people globally 

    • Affect political understanding and consumer behaviour

What is the media theoretical framework?

  • The media theoretical framework provides a holistic and focused approach to interpreting and analysing the media

  • The framework consists of four interrelated components:

    • Media Language

    • Representation

    • Audience

    • Industry

Media Language

This is how the media through their forms, codes and conventions, communicate meanings

Representation

This is how the media portrays events, issues, individuals and social groups

Audience

This is how media forms target, reach and address audiences, how audiences interpret and respond to them and how members of audiences become producers themselves.

Industry

This is how the media industries' processes of production, distribution and circulation affect media forms and platforms

What is media language?

  • Media language refers to how media texts (products) communicate meaning through signs, codes, symbols and technical choices

  • Media language includes visual design, audio, camera work, editing, colours, layout and narrative techniques

  • These aspects are used to create meaning and guide audience interpretation of the messages the producers are trying to communicate
