Representation analysis

  • The representation of masculinity, ethnicity and Raheem Sterling himself have all been highly considered in the production of the GQ front cover

  • The target audience and the cultural context have strongly influenced the choices that have been made

Ethnicity

  • Raheem Sterling is a British Jamaican

    • The choice to use him as the main cover star shows a positive representation of a Black male role model

  • Sterling's representation as a successful and powerful Black man helps challenge the historical underrepresentation of people of colour in magazines

  • The main cover line “Guardian Angel” subverts the stereotypical representation of black men as villainous or dangerous

    • Instead “Guardian Angel” represents him in the position of "hero"which reflects more modern and progressive views in society

  • The main cover line “How Raheem Sterling saved football from itself” suggests he has influence beyond football, showing his wider cultural importance

  • The coverlines surrounding Sterling anchor the representation of him as someone readers can aspire to because of his work ethic, values, and desire to improve himself, not just his sporting success

  • Sterling’s aspirational representation shows that GQ does not want to be associated with racism and are an advocate for equality, which would appeal to their target audience

Examiner Tips and Tricks

When analysing representation, consider the why.

What aspect of context has really influenced that representation? Is it a historical event or issue? Is it the cultural beliefs at the time of the product? This helps to understand the motivation behind the representations more deeply.

Gender

  • Sterling is shown topless with tattoos

    • This reinforces stereotypes of men as strong, muscular, and hyper-masculine

  • His tattoos represent different aspects of his identity:

    • Cross = Christian faith

    • Baby = fatherhood

    • Wings = supernatural ability and exceptional talent

  • The low-angle shot, wide stance, and “Guardian Angel” cover line present Sterling as:

    • Dominant

    • Powerful

    • Protective

  • His jewellery and watch emphasise wealth

    • This reinforces the stereotypical idea that male success is linked to money and status

  • Other men on the cover are also shown as successful in a way that reflects their stereotypically male job roles:

    • Andy Burnham is a politician = intelligent, powerful, strategic

    • Machine Gun Kelly is a rapper = wild, rebellious lifestyle

  • The magazine suggests that modern men are expected to “have it all,” including health, wealth, and strength, which Sterling represents

  • Like women’s magazines, GQ promotes consumerism by telling men what to wear and what products to desire

    • This shows that concerns about appearance, lifestyle, and success affect men as well as women which also reflects more modern, progressive views on men

  • Sterling’s personal struggles with racism also represent a vulnerability that shows an increasing acceptance of men being able to express their feelings more freely and publicly
