Representation analysis

  • The Vogue July 2021 cover represents Malala as both:

    • A Pakistani Muslim woman

    • A global female activist

  • This illustrates combining cultural identity with modern success

  • It challenges traditional stereotypes by showing that women from minority ethnic backgrounds can be:

    • Powerful

    • Educated

    • Influential

Ethnicity

  • Malala is represented as a Pakistani Muslim of Pashtun ethnicity

    • This is unusual for a mainstream fashion magazine like Vogue

  • Malala's dupatta (headscarf) is a key cultural symbol that communicates her:

    • Religion

    • Heritage

    • Identity

  • Malala explains that the headscarf represents her roots and shows that women can have a voice within their culture

    • This challenges the stereotype that Muslim women are oppressed

    • This representation directly challenges Western media stereotypes that often present Muslim women as passive or voiceless

  • The red colour of her clothing and background communicates:

    • Strength

    • Power

    • Celebration

  • It also has cultural meanings linked to marriage and tradition

  • Malala's gold jewellery, makeup and polished appearance suggest she is also confident in a modern, Western context

    • This shows a hybrid identity (both traditional and modern)

  • This combination of cultural dress and fashion styling shows that cultural identity and modern success are achievable in modern society

  • The cover promotes diversity and inclusion, reflecting progressive changes in media representation

Gender

  • Malala is represented as a powerful and inspirational young woman, rather than just being valued for her appearance

  • The caption “survivor, activist, legend” constructs her as strong and influential, highlighting her achievements rather than her looks

    • This challenges typical representations of women in fashion magazines, which often focus on beauty, sexuality or consumerism

  • Malala 's role as an education activist highlights intelligence and leadership, promoting a more empowering image of women

  • The fact she survived an attack and continued campaigning reinforces her as resilient and brave

  • Her direct mode of address creates a sense of confidence and authority

    • This positions her as someone to admire and trust

  • Malala's soft hand gestures and styling still communicate femininity, but in a controlled and elegant way rather than being sexualised

    • This shows that women can be both feminine and powerful, challenging traditional gender stereotypes

  • The cover redefines who a "Vogue woman" is

  • The cover encourages young female audiences to see themselves as capable of success, leadership and change

Modern British culture

  • The cover promotes values such as education, equality and activism, which are all important in contemporary British society

  • Malala’s story represents global and British concerns about human rights and social justice

  • The magazine reflects a society that is more aware of and engaged with political and cultural issues

  • Malala’s appearance includes a mix of cultural symbols through her jewellery, headscarf and makeup which represents a multicultural Britain

  • The July 2021 front cover challenges traditional representations of culture by celebrating diversity and belonging, rather than highlighting difference

Examiner Tips and Tricks

The Vogue magazine front cover could be used for Q2b) which is the unseen representation question where you will be asked to compare two media texts, make judgements and draw a conclusion. This question is worth 25 marks.

You may be asked a question such as ‘Compare the representation of ethnicity in the Vogue and [unseen] front covers.’

To gain marks, you would need to discuss the context of the representations and use specific examples as evidence to strengthen your analysis points. For example:

The Vogue July 2021 front cover represents ethnicity through Malala Yousafzai’s Pakistani Muslim identity, shown clearly through her headscarf (dupatta), which symbolises her Pashtun cultural roots and challenges stereotypes about Muslim women being oppressed. Her red clothing and background also link to cultural meanings of celebration and strength, reinforcing a positive representation of her heritage. In addition, her gold jewellery and modern styling suggest a blend of traditional and British/Western influences, presenting a hybrid ethnic identity that reflects multicultural society.
