  • Define the cloud.

The cloud describes the use of the internet to store data and access software.

  • What is the key difference between accessing data locally and through the cloud?

Data and software accessed locally are confined to the resources of the specific device, while cloud access relies on an internet connection.

  • Define hosted software.

Hosted software is software accessed using the internet, stored on a remote server and accessed through a web browser.

  • Hosted software can also be called                     , or web apps.

Hosted software can also be called web applications, or web apps.

  • Give four advantages of hosted software.

Access from different types of device, the ability to save files online when combined with online storage, features that enable collaboration, updates and security managed by someone else, and it is cost effective through pay monthly plans.

  • Give four disadvantages of hosted software.

It can only be accessed with an internet connection, the user experience is affected by high latency and low bandwidth, it has not as many features as locally installed software, there are privacy concerns over who has access to your data, and hidden fees can add up.

  • Define local software.

Local software is software installed directly onto a device's secondary storage that runs from that device without needing an internet connection.

  • What resources does local software use to run?

The device's own processor, RAM and storage.

  • How is local software usually paid for, compared with hosted software?

Local software is usually purchased with a one-off licence fee, while hosted software operates on a subscription model.

  • Give three advantages of local software.

It works without an internet connection, generally runs faster using the device's own resources, often includes more advanced features, gives the user full control over their software and files, and needs no ongoing subscription.

  • Give three disadvantages of local software.

It can only be used on the device it is installed on, has a higher upfront cost, the user is responsible for installing updates and for security, and it takes up space on secondary storage.

  • Define online storage.

Online storage is long-term secondary storage of data that resides in a remote location, accessible only via a wide area network.

  • Name the three types of online storage.

Public cloud, where customer and provider are different companies; private cloud, where they are a single organisation; and hybrid cloud, which combines both.

  • What problem does a hybrid cloud solve?

It allows sensitive data to remain private while providing public cloud services for less sensitive information.

  • Give four advantages of online storage.

Data can be accessed from anywhere and on any device, it can be shared with anyone holding permissions, capacity can be increased or decreased as needed, providers use multiple servers to back data up, they offer advanced security features, and there is no need to hire specialist staff.

  • Give four disadvantages of online storage.

A stable internet connection is required, data may be vulnerable to security breaches, the user is dependent on the provider for availability and reliability, all data may be lost if the company ceases to exist, and the service may become expensive over time.

  • Give three advantages of local storage.

No internet connection is needed, faster read and write speeds, the user has full control over their data and privacy, it is a one-off cost, and it works on offline devices.

  • True or False?

Backing up a large music library to cloud storage is quick and free.

    False.

Uploads take a long time because bandwidth is limited and file sizes are large, and there is an increased cost since data is often charged per megabyte used.
