  • Define file format.

Cards in this collection (18)

  • Define file format.

A file format is the file type used to store the data in a file. It defines the structure and organisation of the data and determines which software can read it.

  • Define generic file format.

A generic file format is a file type that is compatible and allows sharing between different devices and software programs.

  • What is a non-generic file?

A non-generic file is a file type that requires special software or hardware to be accessed.

  • Give two reasons why generic file types are needed.

They allow the exchange of data across different applications, they are widely adopted so many users and devices can access them, and they can be created, edited and accessed across many different devices.

  • True or False?

    JPEG images use lossy compression.

    True.

JPEG uses lossy compression, which significantly reduces file size while maintaining acceptable image quality.

  • Which two image file formats use lossless compression?

PNG and GIF both use lossless compression.

  • Why is PNG useful for logos and icons?

PNG has transparency support, so graphics can be placed onto different backgrounds easily, and it preserves high-quality images with small file sizes.

  • What is a GIF used for?

A GIF is used for short, animated images and simple graphics, keeping high image quality with small file sizes.

  • What is an MP4 file?

MP4 is a multimedia container rather than a single file format, and can be used for video, image and audio.

  • What is a MOV file?

MOV is a multimedia container format developed by Apple, used for storing video, audio and other media data.

  • What is the difference between MP3 and WAV?

MP3 allows a significant reduction in file size with minimal difference in sound quality, while WAV is uncompressed and preserves the original audio waveform.

  • What is the difference between a .txt and an .rtf file?

A .txt file stores plain, human-readable text with no formatting, while an .rtf file stores formatted text with different styles, fonts, colours and images. A .txt file takes up less memory.

  • Define comma separated values (.csv).

A CSV is a plain text file format used for storing data in a structured manner, in rows and columns with each cell separated by a comma.

  • Give two features of a PDF file.

A PDF retains the layout and formatting of a document across platforms, can be password-protected to stop unauthorised editing, and supports a digital signature.

  • What is the difference between a .zip and a .rar file?

Both are compression containers, but .rar uses a proprietary compression algorithm that generally gives higher compression ratios.

  • What does a .zip file allow you to do?

A .zip file allows multiple files and folders to be compressed into a single, smaller archive, using lossless compression algorithms.

  • What is HTML used for?

HTML is used for creating and structuring web pages. It contains text-based code that defines the structure, layout and content, and is rendered by web browsers.

  • A        file is attached to an HTML document and determines presentation and styling, such as colours, fonts and layout.

A CSS file is attached to an HTML document and determines presentation and styling, such as colours, fonts and layout.
