  • Define image editing.

Image editing is the process of manipulating images and changing them to suit the user's end goal.

  • Name four image editing techniques.

Techniques include placing an image with precision, resizing, cropping, rotating, reflecting (flipping), adjusting brightness and contrast, and grouping and layering.

  • How can an image be placed with precision?

By selecting the image and dragging it to the desired location, or by using coordinates or alignment tools where the software allows.

  • What does maintaining the aspect ratio mean?

It means the image's width and height change at the same rate, which prevents distortion.

  • True or False?

Adjusting the aspect ratio keeps the image's original proportions.

    False.

Adjusting the aspect ratio changes the shape and proportions of the image. Maintaining it is what prevents distortion.

  • Define cropping.

Cropping is cutting out and discarding parts of an image, keeping only the selected portion.

  • Rotating an image means turning it around a          point.

Rotating an image means turning it around a central point.

  • Which rotations are most commonly offered by software?

Software allows rotation to any angle, and commonly offers 90 degrees and 180 degrees as options.

  • Define reflecting an image.

Reflecting, or flipping, an image means creating a mirror image of the original.

  • In which two directions can an image be flipped?

An image can be flipped horizontally, from left to right, or vertically, from top to bottom.

  • What is the difference between brightness and contrast?

Brightness affects all pixels equally, making the image lighter or darker. Contrast adjusts the difference between light and dark values, making the image appear more or less detailed.

  • True or False?

Adjusting brightness changes all pixels in the image equally.

    True.

Brightness affects all pixels in the image equally, making the whole image lighter or darker.

  • What is the difference between grouping and layering images?

Grouping combines images so they can be moved or transformed as a single unit, while layering places images on top of each other.

  • How can layered images be reordered?

The order can be changed by moving an image to the front or to the back.

  • Define file compression.

File compression is reducing the size of a file so that it takes up less storage space and makes file transmission faster.

  • Which element of a file is often the largest?

Images are often the largest element of a file.

  • What two ways can an image be resized or resampled to reduce file size?

By reducing the resolution and by reducing the colour depth.

  • Define resolution.

Resolution is the total amount of pixels that make up an image.

  • How is the resolution of an image calculated?

Resolution is calculated by multiplying the height and width of the image in pixels.

  • What is the effect of a higher resolution?

In general, the higher the resolution the more detail there is in the image, so the higher the quality.

  • How does reducing the resolution reduce file size?

Reducing the resolution decreases the number of pixels, which reduces the file size.

  • Define colour depth.

Colour depth is the number of bits stored per pixel in an image.

  • How does reducing the colour depth reduce file size?

Reducing the colour depth means using fewer bits, and therefore fewer colours, which reduces the file size.

  • True or False?

Reducing resolution or colour depth has no effect on image quality.

    False.

Reducing either one can cause a loss of image quality, especially when the image is viewed at larger sizes.
