Environmental factors of polymers: recyclable or reused materials

  • The environmental factors of polymers refer to how their production, use and disposal affect the environment

  • Many thermoforming polymers, e.g. PET, HDPE are recyclable because they can be reheated and reshaped

  • Thermoset polymers cannot be recycled as they have “set” through thermal/chemical reaction

    • They can only be reused or often ground up into an alternative application

Worked Example

Explain why thermoset polymers cannot be recycled

Answer
Thermoset polymers, unlike thermoforming polymers, have been set into their form through a chemical reaction because they resist being reformed/act as an insulator when heated. This prevents them from being melted and recycled into a new product.

Social factors of polymers: social responsibility

  • The social factors of polymers are how their production and disposal affect people and society

  • Manufacturers should:

    • Reduce polymer waste

    • Improve recycling systems

    • Minimise pollution to protect communities and the environment

Cultural factors of polymers: sensitive to cultural influences

  • The cultural factors of polymers are how their use and design are influenced by different cultures

  • Colours, finishes and product types made from polymers may have different meanings or acceptability in different cultures

    • For example, red products in China are considered lucky

  • Different cultures may prefer certain types of packaging, colours or product styles

    • This influences how polymers are used in design

Ethical factors of polymers: purchased from ethical sources

  • The ethical factors of polymers are how responsibly they are produced and sourced

  • Polymers should be produced responsibly, including:

    • Reducing environmental damage

    • Using sustainable practices where possible

    • Ensuring safe working conditions in manufacturing
