Maps & Plans: Body Paragraphs (British Council Academic IELTS: Writing): Study Material
Maps & plans: body paragraphs
Selecting data
Look at the map or plan and decide which are the key features
Choose features that show change to make comparisons if you are given two maps or plans
Do not add reasons or explanations that are not in the visual
Remember, all the information you need is shown in the map or plan
Examiner Tips and Tricks
Check if the map or plan contains a compass showing which way is north. If there is no compass, you can assume that north is up. Learn and be ready to use the compass points (north, south, east and west).
Ordering data
Decide how you are going to organise your points
If you are given two maps or plans, you could describe changes in your first paragraph and describe what remains the same in the second paragraph
Another option would be to describe the amenities or facilities in one paragraph and the infrastructure in the second paragraph
How you choose to organise your points does not matter as long as it is logical
Make comparisons where possible
Use directions to locate features on the map or plan
Remember you do not have to include all the details, just the most essential information
Writing the body paragraph(s)
Try to make each sentence cover one main point
Check that every sentence adds useful information
Make sure that what you described in the overview is in line with what you include in the body paragraphs
Use prepositional phrases to locate your points on the map
Do not write “in conclusion”
Use the passive voice where appropriate
