Planning problem & solution essays
This essay type usually requires you to explain an issue or problem and suggest possible solutions for it
Typical questions might look like this:
Air pollution is an increasingly serious problem in many parts of the world. What are the reasons for this and how might it be solved?
In many countries, more and more people are moving from rural areas to cities. What are the problems associated with this trend? What measures can be taken to encourage people to stay in country towns?
Despite knowing about the dangers of climate change, many people refuse to change their lifestyle to protect the environment. Why is this the case? How can individuals be encouraged to adopt more eco-friendly habits?
Identifying key words in the question & instructions
Carefully read the instructions to understand the task exactly
Check whether the question is asking you:
To explain solutions only
To explain causes and solutions
To explain causes or problems
Analyse the problem or issue in the question
Brainstorming for ideas
The problem is usually a common issue experienced by many people around the world on general topics such as work, the media, education or the environment
You are not tested on the quality of your ideas, but you do want to be clear, relevant and develop your ideas effectively to get a good score
Stay realistic when suggesting solutions
Avoid vague or impractical suggestions
Plan your main points and supporting evidence / examples before you start writing
