Worked Example

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Write about the following topic:

Some people believe that children should be given homework every day. Others think that homework is unnecessary and puts too much pressure on children. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Write at least 250 words.

Answer

People have different views about whether children should be assigned homework on a daily basis or whether this practice creates unnecessary pressure. While regular homework can reinforce learning, I believe that too much homework can be harmful to children’s well-being.

On the one hand, there are clear reasons why some people support giving children homework every day. Firstly, homework provides an opportunity for students to review and practise what they have learned in class. This repetition can improve understanding and help students retain information more effectively. For example, completing short exercises at home can strengthen key skills such as reading or problem-solving, which can help students perform better academically and feel more confident in their abilities. From my perspective, a reasonable amount of homework can therefore be beneficial for learning.

On the other hand, many people argue that daily homework is unnecessary and places too much pressure on children. One important issue is that excessive homework can reduce the time available for rest, hobbies, and social interaction, all of which are essential for healthy development. For instance, children who spend several hours on homework each evening may feel stressed and lose motivation to study. Consequently, this imbalance can negatively affect both their mental well-being and their attitude towards education. I would therefore argue that when homework is given in large amounts, its disadvantages outweigh its benefits.

In conclusion, although homework can support learning when used appropriately, I believe that giving it every day can create unnecessary pressure. Therefore, it should be assigned in moderation to ensure that children develop both academically and personally.

This is a good model answer because:

  • The introduction clearly identifies the two opposing views and the writer’s own position

  • The essay is organised into a clear four-paragraph structure, which makes the argument easy to follow

  • Each body paragraph deals with one viewpoint only

  • The main ideas are explained clearly and supported with relevant reasons and examples

  • A range of linking words is used effectively to connect ideas and guide the reader through the discussion

  • The language is accurate and varied, with appropriate vocabulary for the topic and for academic essay writing
