How do I answer an APUSH multiple-choice question?

Understanding what the question requires you to do

  • The MCQ section evaluates your ability to:

    • Interpret a stimulus

    • Understand its meaning

    • Link it to APUSH concepts and skills

  • The CED states that multiple-choice questions assess:

    • Developments

    • Processes

    • Sourcing

    • Claims,

    • Evidence

    • Contextualization

    • Connections

  • They do not directly test argumentation

What should I keep in mind?

  • The stimulus itself is important

  • Students often rush to answer choices without fully understanding the image, graph, quote, or passage

  • Take a few seconds at the beginning to understand the source's main idea.

A simple strategy

  • Read the source carefully. Ask:

    • Who created it?

    • When?

    • What's the main idea?

    • Then read the question.

  • Before answering, eliminate obviously incorrect options.

  • Typically, two choices are clearly weak, one is tempting but incomplete, and one best matches the evidence

Avoiding common mistakes

  • Answer from memory before reading the source

  • Select an answer just because you recognize a name or event

  • Ignore words like “most likely,” “best explains,” or “primarily.”

  • Don't spend too much time on one question

  • Focus on identifying the main idea if the source seems difficult

Quick MCQ checklist

  • Ask yourself: What is this source about?

  • What is the relevant time period?

  • Which answer best aligns with the evidence?

  • Which options are clearly outside the time frame?

  • Is the question asking about cause, effect, comparison, or context?
