  • Define marriage.

A legal, and sometimes religious, union between two people as partners in a relationship; a lifelong public commitment.

  • In Christianity, marriage is one of God's gifts at creation. Which verse supports this?

Genesis 2:24: 'a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.'

  • Which Churches see marriage as a sacrament, and what does that mean?

The Catholic and Orthodox Churches — marriage is a lifelong union blessed by God, reflecting Christ's love for the Church.

  • Define procreation.

Having children — seen as a key purpose of marriage in Christianity.

  • Give two Christian purposes of marriage.

The proper place for a sexual relationship, for procreation and raising children in the faith, and for love, friendship and lifelong support.

  • How does the Hadith describe marriage in Islam?

'There is no institution in Islam more beloved and dearer [to God] than marriage' (Hadith).

  • What does the Qur'an mean by calling husbands and wives 'garments for each other'?

That they should support and care for one another (Qur'an 2:187).

  • What is the difference between an arranged and a forced marriage in Islam?

Arranged marriage (parents help find a suitable partner) is allowed; forced marriage is not — 'If a man gives his daughter in marriage while she is averse to it, then such marriage is invalid' (Hadith).

  • In Islam, a Muslim woman must marry a Muslim, but a Muslim man may marry a Muslim, ______ or ______.

In Islam, a Muslim woman must marry a Muslim, but a Muslim man may marry a Muslim, Christian or Jew.

  • Define cohabitation.

A couple living together and having a sexual relationship without being married to one another.

  • Why do the Catholic and Orthodox Churches oppose cohabitation?

They see the only valid place for a sexual relationship as within marriage; the Catechism teaches sex outside marriage 'always constitutes a grave sin'.

  • Why do many Christians, including the Catholic Church, oppose same-sex marriage?

They believe it changes the nature of marriage, which should be a unique relationship between a man and a woman open to procreation.

  • What is the Islamic view on same-sex marriage and cohabitation?

Islam forbids homosexual relationships, so is against same-sex marriage, and is against cohabitation because sex should only occur within marriage.

  • True or False?

UK churches can be forced to conduct same-sex marriages.

    False.

UK law protects churches that do not want to marry same-sex couples; they are not forced to conduct these ceremonies.

  • True or False?

All Christians hold the same view on cohabitation.

    False.

Views vary — the Catholic and Orthodox Churches oppose it, while some, including the Church of England, accept that people may cohabit in a loving, faithful, committed way.
