  • Define materialism (view of death).

The belief that death is the end — there is nothing left when the brain and body stop functioning; based on the physical nature of the body.

  • Define dualism.

The belief that humans are made of two separate parts — body and soul — and that the soul lives on beyond death.

  • Give two non-religious reasons some people believe in an afterlife.

Claimed paranormal events, ghosts, mediums, memories of past lives (reincarnation) or near-death experiences; and because it brings comfort or gives life meaning.

  • Why are many people sceptical of non-religious evidence for an afterlife?

There is no absolute scientific proof for the events, and there are alternative explanations for them.

  • What do Christians believe is evidence of life after death?

The resurrection of Jesus — and the Bible teaching that death is not the end ('He was put to death in the body but made alive in the Spirit', 1 Peter 3:18).

  • According to Christianity, what determines whether a person goes to heaven or hell?

Whether they have led a good life — the parables of the Rich Man and Lazarus and the Sheep and Goats explain how Christians will be judged.

  • What is the difference between 'resurrection' and 'immortality of the soul' in Christian belief?

Resurrection = the body is brought back to life after death; immortality of the soul = the body dies but the soul lives on in the afterlife.

  • Define akhirah.

The Muslim term for the afterlife — Muslims believe all of this life is preparation for akhirah.

  • What are Jannah and Jahannam?

Jannah = paradise; Jahannam = hell — Muslims believe everyone will go to one or the other after death.

  • What do Muslims believe happens on the Day of Judgement?

All will be resurrected for their actions to be judged and their fate decided; 'Allah will assemble you for the Day of Resurrection' (Qur'an 45:26).

  • For Muslims, this life is a preparation for the ______ (afterlife), and all actions are recorded for the Day of Judgement.

For Muslims, this life is a preparation for the akhirah (afterlife), and all actions are recorded for the Day of Judgement.

  • How do Christian and Muslim beliefs about the afterlife compare?

Similar — both believe death is not the end and that people are judged and go to heaven/paradise or hell; they differ in details and terminology.

  • Give a religious argument supporting belief in life after death.

Scripture (the 'Word of God') teaches humans live on after death, and the resurrection of Jesus is proof it can happen.

  • True or False?

Belief in an afterlife is held only by religious people.

    False.

Some non-religious people also believe death is not the end, often based on experiences or the comfort it brings.
