  • Define prejudice.

Prejudging — forming an opinion about someone or a group without knowing them, usually based on negative stereotypes.

  • Define discrimination.

Acting on prejudice — treating others unfairly or unjustly based on their differences.

  • Why are both Christianity and Islam against prejudice and discrimination?

Both teach that all humans are God's creation and created equal, so any action treating another as lesser is wrong.

  • Why do some Christians not accept homosexuality?

They see heterosexuality as God's plan (Adam and Eve; 'be fruitful and increase in number', Genesis 1:28) and take Bible texts condemning homosexual acts literally.

  • What is the view of Christians who 'accept homosexuality but not homosexual acts'?

All are made in God's image and should be accepted, but they believe homosexual acts are sinful; Catholic teaching says the purpose of sex is procreation, so homosexuals must remain celibate.

  • How do accepting Christians justify blessing same-sex marriages?

They focus on Bible teachings about love and say the condemning texts are contextual to when they were written and don't apply the same way today.

  • Why do many Muslims view homosexuality as wrong?

They believe it goes against God's natural law; Shari'ah law forbids same-sex marriage, so homosexual acts count as sex outside marriage, which is forbidden.

  • How might some Muslims respond to those who commit homosexual acts?

Encourage them to repent — 'if they repent and mend their ways, leave them alone – God is always ready to accept repentance' (Qur'an 4:16).

  • What argument do accepting Muslims make about homosexuality today?

That it is not a choice, only Allah can judge on the Day of Judgement, the condemning teachings are contextual, and in the UK it is legal so Muslims should have the choice.

  • Define positive discrimination.

When people who would normally suffer negative discrimination are instead given positive treatment (e.g. disabled sections at events, access ramps).

  • Why do Christians oppose discrimination against disabled people?

It goes against 'love your neighbour as yourself', the Golden Rule, the Parable of the Sheep and Goats, and Jesus' example of caring for and healing the sick.

  • What is the Muslim attitude to disability?

Muslims are taught to help those who need it; the Qur'an teaches everyone is equal and Allah's creation, so all should be helped — they agree with positive discrimination.

  • The ______ Act 2010 upholds the rights of people with disabilities in areas such as employment, education and access.

The Equality Act 2010 upholds the rights of people with disabilities in areas such as employment, education and access.

  • Which verse do Christians use to show all people are equal, opposing discrimination?

Galatians 3:28: 'you are all one in Christ Jesus' — so no one should discriminate against anyone for any reason.

  • True or False?

All Christians hold the same view on homosexuality.

    False.

Views range widely — some reject it, some accept the person but not homosexual acts, and some fully accept it and will bless or conduct same-sex marriages.

  • Define racism (racial prejudice & discrimination).

Showing prejudice to someone because of their ethnic group or nationality, based on the belief that some races are inferior to others.

  • Which UK laws make racism illegal?

The 1976 Race Relations Act and the Equality Act 2010 — making it an offence to speak or behave in a racist way.

  • Why are both Christianity and Islam against racism?

Both teach that all humans are God's creation and created equal, so viewing anyone as 'lesser' is wrong.

  • Which verse do Christians use to show all are equal regardless of race?

Galatians 3:28: 'There is neither Jew nor Gentile... you are all one in Christ Jesus'; also 'God does not show favouritism' (Romans 2:11).

  • Who was Martin Luther King Jr and how did he oppose racism?

A Christian Baptist minister who campaigned for equal rights for Black Americans through peaceful, non-violent protest — e.g. the Montgomery Bus Boycott.

  • What was the Montgomery Bus Boycott?

After Rosa Parks was arrested for refusing to give up her bus seat, King organised a 382-day boycott that led the Supreme Court to change the law.

  • Which Christian church supported apartheid, and who campaigned against it?

The Dutch Reformed Church supported apartheid in South Africa; Archbishop Desmond Tutu led a peaceful campaign against it (ended 1994).

  • What does Qur'an 49:13 teach about race?

God created people 'into races and tribes so that you should get to know one another'; the most honoured are those most mindful of God.

  • What did Muhammad (pbuh) say about race in his final sermon?

'An Arab is not better than a non-Arab... a White person is not better than a Black person except by piety and good actions.'

  • How does the Hajj demonstrate racial equality in Islam?

Everyone wears the same white garments to show equality in the eyes of Allah, within the universal community of the Ummah.

  • The Hadith teaches about equality: 'People are equal like the teeth of a ______.'

The Hadith teaches about equality: 'People are equal like the teeth of a comb.'

  • What did Martin Luther King express in his 'I have a dream' speech?

A vision that his children would 'not be judged by the colour of their skin but by the content of their character'.

  • Define positive discrimination (in tackling racism).

Positive treatment to overcome possible racism — e.g. employers setting recruitment targets for people from minority ethnic groups.

  • True or False?

Islam teaches that people of different races belong to separate, unequal communities.

    False.

Islam is a universal community (Ummah) that makes no distinction between races — all are created from a single man and woman and are equal.
