How has revelation been crucial to the founding of religions?
Without Muhammad's (pbuh) revelation there'd be no Islam; without God revealed in Jesus there'd be no Christianity; without St Paul's conversion Christianity might not have survived.
How does special revelation deepen faith?
Experiencing God can make belief stronger and more personal — people like St Paul, Muhammad (pbuh) and St Bernadette were profoundly impacted by their experiences.
How can revelation provide religious knowledge?
Through scripture, nature and direct experiences, believers can better understand God's nature — e.g. revelation through nature reveals God's omnipotence as creator.
How does revelation offer guidance?
Scripture can offer support in times of crisis and help with moral decisions, sometimes through God's representatives on earth (priests, imams).
Why might general revelation be challenged as based on interpretation?
It depends on the individual — a believer sees a sunset as evidence of God, but an atheist sees only nature, so this revelation is meaningless to a non-believer.
How might sceptics explain a claimed revelatory experience?
As insignificant or coincidence, that the person was searching for it, or through mental illness, epilepsy, starvation or dehydration.
How might an atheist challenge scripture as revelation?
They may argue scripture was written by humans and contains no truth, and that many people read it and receive no revelation at all.
