  • Define suffering.

The experience of pain or hardship — caused by natural events (illness, disasters) or by the actions and behaviour of other people.

  • Why do Christians believe they have a duty to help those who suffer?

They follow the example of Jesus, who helped anyone suffering — e.g. he healed the blind Bartimaeus, a leper, and raised Lazarus from the dead.

  • What does the Parable of the Sheep and Goats teach about suffering?

That those who help the suffering are serving God — 'I was sick and you looked after me... I was in prison and you came to visit me' (Matthew 25:34-36).

  • How can good come from suffering, according to St Paul?

'suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope' (Romans 5:3-4) — it develops care, compassion and empathy.

  • How do Muslims understand suffering?

As part of Allah's plan and a test of faith and character; Allah would not allow suffering greater than a person can endure.

  • The Qur'an teaches: 'If you are ______ and mindful of God, this is the best course' (Qur'an 3:186).

The Qur'an teaches: 'If you are steadfast and mindful of God, this is the best course' (Qur'an 3:186).

  • How do Christians and Muslims answer why a loving God allows suffering?

Humans have free will, and much suffering is caused by people misusing it to hurt others — so it is not fair to blame God.

  • How did Jesus show he was against causing suffering?

He taught 'love your neighbour' and spoke out against violence even in self-defence — when a disciple cut off a guard's ear at his arrest, Jesus healed the guard.

  • What does the Hadith teach about those who suffer?

'Be compassionate towards the destitute' — caring for others is central to the Ummah.

  • What should a Muslim do if they accidentally cause suffering?

Repair any damage caused; Allah is merciful and will forgive those who are truly sorry, as he forgave Adam and Hawwa.

  • How does Islam explain some human-caused suffering?

It can be caused by people giving in to the temptation of Iblis (the devil).

  • True or False?

Christians and Muslims believe free will means they may act however they wish.

    False.

Free will is never seen as freedom to act against their faith's teachings — believers should use it responsibly in line with God's will.
