Define gender equality.
Men and women being given the same rights and opportunities as each other.
Define gender discrimination.
Acting against someone on the basis of their gender — e.g. paying women less than men for the same job.
Define sexual stereotyping.
Fixed generalisations about how men and women should behave, e.g. that women are more caring or are the weaker sex.

That it is her choice, and a ban on head coverings would be just as oppressive because it removes that choice.

Equality means both are seen as having equal value; both faiths hold that men and women may take on different roles while still being of equal worth to God.
Why is it important to distinguish religious belief from culture on gender issues in Islam?
Some inequalities Muslim women face (e.g. over education, driving or voting) stem from cultural practices in some countries rather than from Islam itself.
