They are high in ecological validity, usually taking place in real, natural settings. Participants often don't know they are being studied, so are less likely to show demand characteristics.
Give one weakness of field experiments relating to internal validity.
Less control means more risk of uncontrolled extraneous variables, which could become confounding variables and threaten internal validity — the researcher's ability to be confident the IV caused the change in the DV.
Define a natural experiment.
A natural experiment is a research method in which the IV is naturally occurring and not manipulated by the researcher — it would have existed anyway, whether or not the study took place.
Give two examples of a naturally occurring IV.
Age — comparing digit-span recall in a young and an older group; gender — comparing girls' and boys' performance on an emotional intelligence task; or circumstances — comparing trained and untrained teachers.
Why can't participants be randomly allocated in a natural experiment?

Unrelated data, because the two groups are separate from one another.
