  • Define torque.

Cards in this collection (15)

  • Define torque.

Torque is the product of a force and its lever arm about the axis of rotation.

  • Define lever arm.

The lever arm is the perpendicular distance from the axis of rotation to the line of action of the force.

  • State the equation for the magnitude of torque.

    \tau = r F_{\bot} = r F \text{sin} \theta

    • \tau = magnitude of the torque (N·m)

    • r = distance from the axis of rotation to the point where the force is applied (m)

    • F = magnitude of the applied force (N)

    • F_{\bot} = component of the force perpendicular to r (N)

    • \theta = angle between the force and r (°)

  • State the three factors that determine the magnitude of a torque.

    • The magnitude of the applied force

    • The distance from the axis of rotation to the point of application of the force

    • The angle between the position vector and the force vector

  • When does a given force produce the maximum torque?

When the force is applied perpendicular to r, the line from the axis of rotation to the point of application (\theta = 90°), so that \tau = r F.

  • How is torque the rotational analog of force?

A net force causes linear acceleration, while a net torque causes angular acceleration.

  • A force applied at the .......... of rotation does not produce a torque.

A force applied at the axis of rotation does not produce a torque.

  • True or False?

A force pointing directly toward the axis of rotation produces the maximum torque.

    False.

The force acts along the line of r, so \theta = 180° and \text{sin} \theta = 0, so it produces zero torque.

  • What is a force diagram?

A diagram that represents an object as a rigid system and shows each force at the point where it is exerted on the system.

  • How does a force diagram differ from a free-body diagram?

    • Free-body diagrams represent objects as point particles

    • Force diagrams represent objects as rigid systems

  • What do the length and direction of an arrow represent in a force diagram?

    • Length: the relative magnitude of the force

    • Direction: the relative direction of the force

  • Why are force diagrams useful for analyzing torque?

    • They show the location at which each force is exerted relative to the axis of rotation

    • They allow the rotational motion of the system to be predicted

  • Where should each force arrow start when drawing a force diagram of a rod?

On, and pointing away from, the point at which the force is exerted on the rod.

  • In a pulley-mass system, the forces on the rotating pulley are shown on a .......... diagram.

In a pulley-mass system, the forces on the rotating pulley are shown on a force diagram.

  • True or False?

A free-body diagram shows the point on a rigid system where each force is exerted.

    False.

A free-body diagram treats the object as a point particle. A force diagram shows where each force acts on the rigid system.
