The use of goal setting
Having relevant goals helps participants of all types in physical activity and sport
Performers may set their own goals, or goals may be set by a sports coach or teacher
Setting goals in sport is important as they help:
performers to adhere (or stick) to their training programme
a performer to focus and reduce stress
to motivate performers and drive them to achieve their potential
to improve and/or optimise performance over time
The use of SMART targets to Optimise Performance
Goal setting in sport involves the use of targets known as SMART targets
SMART is an acronym that abbreviates the following:

Measurable | Need to be quantitative i.e. based on a number e.g. a time, distance, quantity | Race is a timed event |
Achievable | It must be realistic and within the performer's capability to achieve it | Current time is 26 mins 52 secs |
Realistic | Measurements of progress should be logged to track progress and achieveable | Log weekly 5km run times and split times |
Time-bound | A set period of time or deadline by which the goal will be achieved | I will achieve this within the next three months |
