Uses of glucose in plants

  • The glucose produced in photosynthesis may be:

    • used for respiration (both aerobic and anaerobic)

    • converted into insoluble starch for storage in the stems, leaves and roots

    • used to produce fat or oil for storage (especially in seeds)

    • used to produce cellulose, which strengthens the cell wall

    • combined with nitrate ions absorbed from the soil to produce amino acids for protein synthesis

Diagram showing the uses of glucose produced by plants. A glucose molecule has the formula C₆H₁₂O₆. Glucose can be used directly in respiration to release energy for the cell. It can be converted into sucrose for transport around the plant or converted into fats and oils for energy storage in seeds. Many glucose molecules can be joined together to form cellulose, which provides strength in cell walls, or starch for storage. Starch is insoluble, so storing glucose as starch does not affect osmosis in cells. Glucose can also be combined with nitrates absorbed from the soil to make amino acids, which are then used to make proteins.

Testing for starch

  • Glucose produced during photosynthesis is converted to starch, so the presence of starch indicates that photosynthesis has occurred

  • The leaf can be tested for the presence of starch using iodine solution

  • Iodine solution is an example of a qualitative reagent

In step 1, a green leaf is placed in a beaker of boiling water over a lit Bunsen burner to break down the cell walls. 

In step 2, the leaf is placed in ethanol in a boiling tube for 10 minutes. The boiling tube is heated in a hot-water bath with the Bunsen burner switched off. This removes chlorophyll from the leaf, turning the ethanol green and leaving the leaf colourless. 

In step 3, the colourless leaf is washed in water to soften it. 

In step 4, the leaf is placed on a white tile and covered with iodine solution; iodine changes colour in the presence of starch. 

In step 5, the colour change is observed. Areas of the leaf that contained chlorophyll turn blue-black, showing that starch is present in these areas.
After breaking down the leaf cell walls, iodine can be used to test for the presence of starch and whether photosynthesis has been taking place
