Prototyping in polymers
Polymer prototypes allow designers to test shape, fit, ergonomics, assembly and appearance before final polymer parts or products are manufactured
Common methods include:
3D printing
Laser cutting acrylic
Vacuum forming over a simple former, hand fabrication
Resin casting
Additive manufacturing is useful because a mould or die is not needed to create the part, and designs can be changed quickly
Examples include the casing for a 3D-printed controller, a vacuum-formed blister pack or an acrylic display model
Batch production in polymers
Batch production is used for limited quantities of polymer products or parts that might require several design or colour variations
Reusable moulds, formers, jigs and digital files improve consistency between products
Processes include:
Vacuum forming
Rotational moulding
Resin casting
3D printing
Examples include custom trays, specialist protective covers, promotional products and small production run electronics enclosures
Mass production in polymers
Mass production is widely used for polymers because many moulding processes have fast cycle times and require little finishing
Injection moulding and blow moulding use expensive steel tooling, but the cost per component becomes low when millions of items are made
Granules of polymers (small beads) are fed into a hopper, heated, formed, cooled and ejected with limited human handling
Examples include bottle tops, food containers, plug casings, chairs and toy components
Continuous production in polymers
Continuous production is used where a liquid polymer is formed into an unbroken length or film, or where the product or part is in constant demand
Extrusion pushes polymer through a shaped die, while film extrusion produces continuous thin film for bags and packaging
The production line can run for long periods and products are cut to length or wound onto rolls
Examples of continuous material production include PVC pipe, cable insulation, polymer sheet, cling film and 3D-printer filament

3D printing does not need an expensive mould. [1] A digital model can be created and printed with relative ease, allowing the designer to test and iterate the casing shape, fit and assembly over and over before committing to mass-production tooling. [1]
Examiner Tips and Tricks
Take care when including extrusion in answer. Extrusion can be used in both mass and continuous manufacture
If the question is about mass production of polymers, name injection moulding or blow moulding as your example, since these use a hopper of granules and a rapid, repeated moulding cycle to make discrete, identical items (bottle tops, chairs, toy components). Save extrusion for continuous production, where it pushes polymer through a shaped die to make an unbroken length or film with a constant profile, such as PVC pipe, cable insulation or cling film — not a stand-alone discrete component.
