Manufacturing to minimum and maximum measurements
Tolerance is the permitted variation (difference) from a desired measurement
Manufacturing to a tolerance recognises that:
It is difficult and expensive to make every part accurately
Some parts can have measurements that are not exactly accurate
The minimum measurement is the smallest acceptable size
The maximum measurement is the largest acceptable size
Any measurement between the minimum and maximum is within “tolerance”
A part outside the limits may not fit, work safely or meet the required quality standard
Tighter tolerances require more accurate equipment and more inspection, which increases cost
Worked Example
A shaft is specified as 20.0 mm ± 0.2 mm. State the minimum and maximum acceptable sizes.

Examiner Tips and Tricks
When answering calculation questions, make sure you use the measurement given (e.g. mm, cm, inch, etc) in your answer.
Always show your working out because you will gain “working out” marks even if your final answer is not correct.
If your final answer is correct, you will always get full marks, whether you have the correct working out or not.

The tolerance should be as wide as the product can accept, because increasing precision increases cost

Explain why a manufacturer should not use an extremely tight tolerance for every dimension.
