Hobbies & Free Time: Grammar (AQA GCSE Polish): Revision Note

To talk about what you enjoy doing in your free time, two key grammar points are essential: using lubię and nie lubię to express likes and dislikes
Lubię, wolę, nie lubię +noun/ infinitive
Use lubię before a verb to say that you like doing something
Use wolę before a verb to say that you prefer doing something
Use nie lubię before a verb to say that you don't like doing something
Lubię, wolę and nie lubię can go before an infinitive (Lubię czytać) or a noun (Lubię muzykę)
After nie lubię the noun goes into the genitive: Nie lubię sportu
In Polish, lubię translates most naturally as I like doing something, not I like something
Here are some examples using lubię with different pronouns and verbs from this unit:

In Polish, to say that you don’t like doing something, you simply use: nie lubię + verb (in the infinitive)

On lubi grać w piłkę nożną. He likes playing football | On nie lubi grać w piłkę nożną. He doesn't like playing football |
You can extend your answer by adding a reason using bo (because)
Use bo or ponieważ (because) to give a reason
The word order after them stays the same

It is important to use grammar in context
Practise by writing a sentence for each hobby in the vocabulary list - say whether you like or don't like it and give a reason using bo
This will also help you prepare for the speaking and writing exams
Nominalisation of infinitive
In Polish, any verb can be turned into a noun by adding one of these endings:
-nie
-cie
This is called nominalisation

pisać | pisanie | writing |
grać | granie | playing |
These endings attach to the verb stem, and the result becomes a neuter noun and are especially common in sentences about hobbies
Examples:
Pływanie sprawia mi przyjemność.. - Swimming is fun for me
Uwielbiam czytanie. - I love reading
Wędrowanie po górach jest świetne. - Hiking in the mountains is great
Giving times( incl. 24-hour clock)
In Polish, you can use the 24-hour clock to say when you do your hobbies. This is especially useful when talking about your daily routine and free time
Some useful structures:
O której godzinie…? – At what time…?
O godzinie… – At … o’clock.
od … do … – from … to …
do godziny… – until …

When giving a specific time, use o + the correct form of the number:
o pierwszej – at one o'clock
o drugiej – at two o'clock
o trzeciej – at three o'clock
o osiemnastej – at eighteen hundred / 6 pm
Remember that the 24-hour clock is common in Polish, especially for timetables and organised activities
