Modal verbs

• Modal verbs are very useful because they allow you to give opinions, talk about possibilities, rules, obligations and what you can / should / must / want to do

• Móc – can

  • Mogę kontaktować się z przyjaciółmi przez media społecznościowe
    I can keep in touch with friends through social media

• Musieć – must / have to

  • Muszę uważać na to, co publikuję
    I have to be careful about what I post

• Powinien – should

  • Powinniśmy spędzać mniej czasu w internecie
    We should spend less time online

• Chcieć – want to

  • Chcę korzystać z mediów społecznościowych, ponieważ są ciekawe
    I want to use social media because it is interesting

• After a modal verb, the second verb is usually in the infinitive

  • mogę korzystać

  • muszę uważać

  • powinienem ograniczyć

  • chcę publikować

• For example: Muszę uważać, ponieważ media społecznościowe mogą być niebezpieczne.

Accusative case for direct objects

• The accusative case (biernik) is used for direct objects – the person, animal or thing that receives the action of the verb

• To ask for the direct object, use the questions:

  • Kogo? (Whom?)

  • Co? (What?)

• Publikuję zdjęcia i filmy
  I post photos and videos

• Wysyłam wiadomości do przyjaciół
  I send messages to friends

• Czytam komentarze online
  I read comments online

• Obserwuję znaną osobę na Instagramie
  I follow a famous person on Instagram

Common endings

• Feminine noun ending in -a change usually change to -ę in the accusative

  • książka - książkę

  • aplikacja - aplikację

  • strona - stronę
