Past, present, future tense

• To talk about life at school, it is important to use different time frames. Using the past, present and future will help you give more detailed answers

Present tense – What is school like now?

• Use the present tense to describe your current school life

  • Uczę się w liceum. – I study at a secondary school

  • Lubię matematykę, ponieważ jest interesująca. – I like maths because it is interesting

  • Zwykle zaczynam lekcje o ósmej rano. – I usually start lessons at eight in the morning

  • Moi nauczyciele są mili i pomocni. – My teachers are nice and helpful

Past tense – What was school like?

• Use the past tense to talk about previous experiences at school. Remember that the past tense often changes according to gender

  • W zeszłym roku zmieniłem / zmieniłam szkołę. – Last year I changed schools

  • Wczoraj pisałem / pisałam ważny test. – Yesterday I took an important test

  • W szkole podstawowej lubiłem / lubiłam język polski. – At primary school, I liked Polish

  • Wczoraj nie miałem / nie miałam pracy domowej. – Yesterday, I did not have any homework

Future tense – What will happen in the future?

• Use the future tense to talk about your future plans and education

  • W przyszłym roku będę zdawać egzamin. – Next year, I will take an exam

  • Po szkole będę studiować na uniwersytecie. – After school, I will study at university

  • W przyszłości chciałbym / chciałabym zostać nauczycielem / nauczycielką. – In the future, I would like to become a teacher

  • Mam nadzieję, że zdam maturę. – I hope that I will pass my school-leaving exams

• Using different time frames allows you to talk about your past experiences, current school life and future plans

• This is especially useful when discussing life at school, as you can describe what school was like before, what you do now and what you hope or plan to do in the future

• Try to include:

  • Past: what happened or what you used to do – W zeszłym roku zmieniłem/zmieniłam szkołę.

  • Present: what your school life is like now – Obecnie uczę się w liceum.

  • Future: your plans and ambitions – W przyszłości będę studiować.

• Using a range of time frames will help you give more detailed and interesting answers in your speaking and writing

• To give more detailed answers about life at school, it is useful to express your opinions, give reasons and link your ideas together using connectives

  I like my school because my teachers are nice.

• Nie lubię pracy domowej, bo często jest nudna.
  I don't like homework because it is often boring.

Connectives

• Lubię moją szkołę, ponieważ jest nowoczesna i mam dobrych przyjaciół.
  I like my school because it is modern and I have good friends

• Moim zdaniem mundurki są praktyczne, jednak nie wszyscy uczniowie lubią je nosić
  In my opinion, uniforms are practical; however, not all students like wearing them

• Chociaż czasami mam dużo pracy domowej, lubię szkołę, ponieważ uczę się wielu ciekawych rzeczy
  Although I sometimes have a lot of homework, I like school because I learn many interesting things

• By combining an opinion + reason + connective, you can make your answers longer and more interesting:

  • Uważam, że moja szkoła jest dobra, ponieważ nauczyciele są pomocni, ale czasami mamy za dużo pracy domowej. I think that my school is good because the teachers are helpful, but sometimes we have too much homework
