  • The topic of ‘Relationships and marriage’ can appear in any of the exams - you might be asked to speak or write about yourself, or understand information about others

  • Use the vocabulary and grammar seen so far to take a closer look at some typical exam questions and how you might tackle them

Relationships and marriage: listening

  • In the listening exam, there are questions where you need to decide if the speaker’s opinion is positive, negative, or positive and negative

  • To get the correct answer, you need to listen out for adjectives and opinion phrases

  • This question will help you to practise this

Worked Example

You hear some Polish teenagers talking about relationships. What does each speaker say about their relationship?

Write P for a positive opinion.
Write N for a negative opinion.
Write P+N for a positive and negative opinion.

Answers

  • Lena P - Dobrze dogaduję się z moją mamą, ponieważ jest przyjazna i cierpliwa. (I get on well with my mother because she is friendly and patient.)

  • Janusz P+N - Czasami kłócę się z moim bratem, ale tak naprawdę on jest bardzo miły. (I sometimes argue with my brother, but he is actually very nice.)

  • Tomasz N - Uważam, że mój ojciec jest bardzo surowy, a czasami nawet podły. (I think my father is very strict and sometimes even mean.)

  • Sara P+N -Moja siostra jest czasami bezczelna, ale zawsze się mną opiekuje.(My sister is sometimes cheeky, but she always takes care of me.)

Examiner Tips and Tricks

Listen carefully for connecting words like ale (but) and ponieważ (because) - these often signal that a speaker is about to give a contrasting or additional opinion, which could change your answer from P or N to P+N.

Relationships and marriage: speaking

  • In part 1 of the speaking exam, you will take part in a role play with your teacher

  • You will be given a situation and five tasks to complete in Polish

  • These questions will help you to practise speaking about the topic of 'Relationships', including friendship, spending time with others, the advantages and disadvantages of friendship, and friendships in the future

Worked Example

Talk to your teacher about friendship and relationships. Describe:

  • z kim spędzasz najczęściej czas?

  • przyjaźń- zalety

  • !

  • ? przyjaciel

  • przyjaźń w przyszłości

Answers

  1. Powiedz, z kim najczęściej spędzasz czas.

Najczęściej spędzam czas z moimi najlepszymi przyjaciółmi. Po szkole często spotykamy się w parku albo u mnie w domu. Lubię spędzać z nimi czas, ponieważ zawsze możemy porozmawiać i dobrze się bawić.
I spend most of my time with my best friends. After school, we often meet in the park or at my house. I like spending time with them because we can always talk and have fun.

  1. Powiedz, jakie są zalety posiadania dobrego przyjaciela.

Moim zdaniem posiadanie dobrego przyjaciela ma wiele zalet. Przyjaciel może nas wspierać, kiedy mamy problemy, i zawsze możemy z nim porozmawiać. Możemy też razem spędzać czas i dobrze się bawić. Uważam, że ważne jest również to, że możemy ufać dobremu przyjacielowi.
In my opinion, having a good friend has many advantages. A friend can support us when we have problems, and we can always talk to them. We can also spend time together and have fun. I also think it is important that we can trust a good friend.

  1. Opowiedz o problemie, który czasami pojawia się między przyjaciółmi.

Jedną z wad przyjaźni są kłótnie. Czasami przyjaciele mają różne opinie i mogą się nie zgadzać. Na przykład ostatnio pokłóciłem się z przyjacielem o to, gdzie powinniśmy spędzić weekend. Na szczęście szybko się pogodziliśmy.
One disadvantage of friendship is arguments. Sometimes friends have different opinions and may disagree. For example, recently I argued with a friend about where we should spend the weekend. Fortunately, we made up quickly.

  1. Opowiedz o swoim najlepszym przyjacielu / swojej najlepszej przyjaciółce.

Mój najlepszy przyjaciel ma na imię Kuba. Znamy się od kilku lat i bardzo dobrze się dogadujemy. Jest zabawny, szczery i zawsze mnie wspiera. W wolnym czasie lubimy grać w piłkę i oglądać filmy. Uważam, że mam szczęście, że go znam.
My best friend is called Kuba. We have known each other for several years and we get on very well. He is funny, honest and always supports me. In our free time, we like playing football and watching films. I think I am lucky to know him.

  1. Powiedz, jak wyobrażasz sobie przyjaźń w przyszłości.

Myślę, że w przyszłości przyjaźń będzie trochę inna. Ludzie będą prawdopodobnie częściej komunikować się przez internet i media społecznościowe. Mam jednak nadzieję, że nadal będziemy spotykać się osobiście.
I think that in the future friendship will be a little different. People will probably communicate more often through the internet and social media. However, I hope that we will still meet in person.

  • In part 2 you answer five questions from your teacher about a photo: three are printed on your card and two are unseen

  • Part 3 is a general conversation on the two themes not covered by your photo card

  • This question will help you to practise describing a photo on the topic of 'Relationships'.

Worked Example

Opowiedz co widzisz na fotografii?

relationship speaking

Answer

Here is an example answer.

Na zdjęciu jest grupa trzech przyjaciół — dwie dziewczyny i chłopak. Siedzą w parku i razem patrzą w laptop. Uśmiechają się i wyglądają na bardzo szczęśliwych. Myślę, że są uczniami i być może odrabiają razem pracę domową. Dobrze się dogadują i wierzę, że łączy ich dobra przyjaźń.

In the photo there is a group of three friends — two girls and a boy. They are sitting in the park and looking at a laptop together. They are smiling and look very happy. I think that they are students and perhaps they are doing their homework together. They get on well and I believe that they have a good friendship.

Examiner Tips and Tricks

  • Use the acronym PALM to help you describe a photo - People, Action, Location, Mood. Identify the aspects of PALM in the example answer above.

Relationships and marriage: reading

  • In the reading exam, you need to translate a few Polish sentences into English

    • Section C is a short passage worth 9 marks, marked by key idea

  • This question will help you to practise translating into English.

  • Here are some tips:

    • Translate meaning, but don't translate word-for-word

    • Check tenses carefully

    • Look out for false friends

    • Check if nouns are singular or plural

Worked Example

Translate these sentences into English.

  1. Mój sympatyczny kolega aktualnie czeka na autobus.

  2. Moja ciotka chciałaby pozostać niezamężna.

  3. Muszę lepiej komunikować się z moimi przyjaciółmi.

  4. Jej rodzice wzięli ślub.

  5. Wiele par decyduje się na związek cywilny.

Answers

  1. My friendly classmate is currently waiting for the bus.
Watch out for this false friend. sympatyczny means friendly, not "sympathetic”, aktualnie means currently, not "actually”

  2. My aunt would like to stay single.
Chciałaby means 'would like to' - don't confuse it with musi (must/have to)

  3. I have to / must communicate better with my friends.
In Polish the form przyjaciółmi is the instrumental plural, used after the preposition z (‘with’).

  4. Her parents got married. This is the past tense — wzięli ślub works like a past participle construction.

  5. Many couples choose a civil partnership. We haven't translated word-for-word. decyduje się means 'to choose/decide on' - don't translate it literally as 'decide themselves for'.

Relationships and marriage: writing

  • In the writing paper, there are two questions where you need to write a paragraph guided by bullet points

  • For Foundation tier, the first question requires you to write approximately 40 words

Worked Example

Write a short description of yourself, your family and your friends.
Write approximately 40 words in Polish.
You must write something about each bullet point.
Describe:

  • jak wyglądasz

  • twoją rodzinę

  • twój najlepszy przyjaciel / twoja najlepsza przyjaciółka

  • twoja opinia na temat małżeństwa

Answer

Here is an example response of 56 words.

Nie jestem bardzo wysoka i mam krótkie brązowe włosy oraz niebieskie oczy. Jestem dość przyjazna i pomocna, ale czasami także trochę leniwa. W mojej rodzinie są cztery osoby. Często kłócę się z moją siostrą. Moja najlepsza przyjaciółka ma na imię Anna i dobrze się dogadujemy. Uważam, że małżeństwo jest bardzo ważne, ponieważ razem można być szczęśliwym.

I am not very tall and I have short brown hair and blue eyes. I am quite friendly and helpful, but sometimes also a bit lazy. There are four people in my family. I often argue with my sister. My best friend is called Anna and we get on well. I think marriage is very important because you can be happy together.

Examiner Tips and Tricks

When completing a 40-word writing task, remember that you can just answer in the present tense, which will give access to full marks. Tick off each bullet point as you cover it, and always check your work carefully once you have finished. Look at the response above to identify where each bullet point is covered.

Higher tier

  • In the writing exam, you need to translate few English sentences into Polish

  • Higher Q3 is worth 12 marks (6 for conveying key messages, 6 for grammar), minimum 50 words

  • This question will help you to practise translating into Polish, focusing on Higher tier-only vocabulary

  • Here are some tips:

    • Translate meaning, but don't translate word-for-word

    • Check tenses carefully

    • Look out for false friends

    • Check if nouns are singular or plural

Worked Example

Translate these sentences into Polish.

  1. In my opinion, it is very important to have a good relationship with your siblings.

  2. Although my brother is sometimes jealous, he is usually very generous.

  3. My best friend, who is very independent, never argues with her parents.

  4. I believe that it is important to get on well with each other so that a friendship works well.

  5. Without my friends, I would feel very sad.

Answers

  1. Moim zdaniem, bardzo ważne jest mieć dobre relacje z rodzeństwem.
Moim zdaniem is an introductory phrase — it does not change the word order. The verb jest stays in position 2. The infinitive phrase with mieć goes naturally towards the end of the sentence.

  2. Chociaż mój brat jest czasami zazdrosny, zwykle jest bardzo hojny.
Chociaż is a subordinating conjunction — it sends the verb jest straight to its normal position in the clause. Notice the verb then comes immediately after the comma to begin the main clause: verb-comma-verb.

  3. Moja najlepsza przyjaciółka, która jest bardzo niezależna, nigdy nie kłóci się z rodzicami. Która jest bardzo niezależna is a relative clause — it gives extra information about the noun. In Polish, the verb does NOT move to the end of the clause.
The relative clause is placed between commas, because it is additional, non‑essential information. The adverb “nigdy” appears before the verb, which is typical in Polish.

  4. Wierzę, że dla dobrego funkcjonowania przyjaźni ważne jest, abyśmy się dobrze dogadywali. Polish doesn’t have the subject “it”.Instead puts the adjective first ważne jest ( important ). So the Polish structure is: adjective + jest + clause. This looks “reversed” compared to English, but for Polish it’s the natural order.

  5. Bez moich przyjaciół, byłoby mi bardzo smutno.
Bez moich przyjaciół” is a prepositional phrase with bez (without), which requires the genitive case in Polish. Byłoby mi is a conditional construction. Polish uses the dative mi to express how someone feels. Bardzo smutno is an adverbial expression describing the emotional state. In Polish, feelings are often expressed with adverbs, not adjectives.
