Social Media: Grammar (AQA GCSE Polish): Revision Note

• To talk about 'social media', you need to know how to give reasons, discuss advantages and disadvantages, and express your opinions clearly and accurately

Present-tense verbs (używać + genitive)

• The Polish verb używać means to use. It is an important verb when talking about social media, technology and the internet

• Unlike the English verb to use, używać requires the genitive case (dopełniacz) for the thing that is being used

• The basic structure is: subject + present tense of używać + genitive

Present tense of używać

• The noun media changes to the genitive form mediów, and społecznościowe also changes to społecznościowych

• Watch out for the plural form. A common mistake is using the third-person singular instead of the plural form. Młodzi ludzie używają mediów społecznościowych not Młodzi ludzie używa mediów społecznościowych

• Używać and korzystać z both mean -to use

  • Both constructions take the genitive, but korzystać must be followed by z

    • używać + genitive- używam telefonu

    • korzystać z + genitive- korzystam z telefonu

Adverbs of frequency

• Adverbs of frequency say how often something happens

  • They are especially useful when talking about daily routines, social media, technology and free time

Word order

• In Polish, adverbs of frequency usually come before the main verb:

  • Zawsze używam telefonu. I always use my phone

  • Często korzystam z internetu. I often use the internet

  • Rzadko oglądam telewizję. I rarely watch TV

  • Nigdy nie udostępniam danych osobowych. I never share personal data

• When nigdy means “never”, Polish normally uses double negation: nigdy + nie + verb

  • Nigdy nie używam TikToka. I never use TikTok

• Ponieważ means 'because' use it when you are giving a reason for something

• It is very useful when talking about social media and expressing your opinions

• After because, we give the reason why something happens or why we have an opinion
