Dative case (pomagać + dative)
The verb pomagać means “to help” and is followed by the dative case
After pomagać, ask: Komu? – To whom?
Pomagam dzieciom. – I help children
Pomagam starszym ludziom. – I help elderly people
Pomagam osobom potrzebującym. – I help people in need

Important adjective endings
When an adjective describes a noun in the dative case, both words change:
osoba potrzebująca → osobie potrzebującej
osoby potrzebujące → osobom potrzebującym
starszy człowiek → starszemu człowiekowi
starsi ludzie → starszym ludziom
Examiner Tips and Tricks
Learn phrases, not just individual words: pomagać osobom potrzebującym is easier to remember than pomagać + a noun separately
Watch the endings: the adjective and noun often both change in the dative, e.g. osoby potrzebujące - osobom potrzebującym
Be careful with singular and plural: dziecku = to a child, but dzieciom = to children
Use the dative to develop your answers: Lubię pomagać osobom potrzebującym, ponieważ czuję się wtedy potrzebny. This adds a reason and helps develop your response
Don't translate word-for-word from English: English uses “help someone”, but Polish uses pomagać komuś
Conditional: chciałbym / chciałabym
Chciałbym / chciałabym means “I would like”
Use it to talk about:
wishes and preferences
what you would like to do in the future
hypothetical situations
things you would like to change or experience

Structure: chciałbym / chciałabym + infinitive
The verb that follows stays in the infinitive
Chciałbym pomagać innym. – I would like to help others
Chciałabym pracować jako wolontariuszka. – I would like to work as a volunteer
Chciałbym zaangażować się w działalność charytatywną. – I would like to get involved in charity work

Chciałbym/chciałabym + infinitive + ponieważ...
Chciałbym pomagać osobom potrzebującym, ponieważ uważam, że każdy powinien otrzymać wsparcie
Gdybym + past-tense form (miał/miała) + chciałbym/chciałabym...
Gdybym miał więcej wolnego czasu, chciałbym pracować jako wolontariusz
Chciałbym/chciałabym + infinitive + ale...
Chciałabym pomagać w schronisku, ale nie mam wystarczająco dużo wolnego czasu
Using conditional forms such as chciałbym, chciałaby, chcielibyśmy allows you to express ideas more precisely and develop your answers
